KHAYALETHU PROJECT FOR YOUTH AT RISK

About Youth for Christ KwaZulu Natal (YFC/KZN):

YFC/KZN exists to bring hope to young people in and from disadvantaged communities by creating opportunities for holistic development. YFC/KZN aims to develop young people mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. The focus or issues addressed through the projects of YFC/KZN are homeless and poverty stricken children, orphan and vulnerable children, dysfunctional families, leadership development, working with young people in schools in the areas of personal development, gender empowerment, reproductive health and HIV and AIDS.The Khayalethu Project For Youth At Risk is one of the initiatives that was started by YFC/KZN.
Khayalethu Residential Care Shelters

Khayalethu in Pietermaritzburg has two residential shelters: girl’s shelter in 31 Burger Street, and boys shelter in 230 Pine Street.  Children living in the shelters are between the ages of 10 – 18 years. The boys shelter can house 25 boys and the girls shelter can house 15 girls. Children are brought to the shelters by our Outreach Team (working with young people on the streets) or referred by Department of Social Development. The Outreach Team identify children who are willing to go home, but immediate placement at home is not possible. It is then the role of the shelter staff to prepare the boys, girls and their families for reunification. Whilst at the shelter, the children have chores and activities that encourage healthy lifestyles and positive living.
